2024 April 28 John Laughlin “Believe”
The word SAINT. The Apostles Creed. We believe in a different sense to the word used in the Bible. What I believe doesn’t necessarily change the way I live. When the Scriptures talk about believing about Jesus it means that your belief should change the way that you live. John the Baptist said, “If you believe what I say then repent (change)”
Believing in Jesus requires us to change. John Ch 3:36 This occurs during the little chat between Jesus and Nichodemus, ending up in verse 36 (John compared versions)
NKJV He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” (Sort of implies doom for those who never heard)
NIV Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them. (Implies that those who actively reject Jesus are in trouble)
ESV Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. (See explanation in next paragraph)
ESV got the Greek word right. Not believing is equivalent to not obeying. Therefore believing is equivalent to obeying. The culture of the Kingdom is very different to the culture of the world. The words of Jesus show us how to live. The barrel of Jewels never runs out and there is always a more precious one to find (pearl of great price). We can hear the Spirit of God speak every time we read His word. God speaks into our spirit and shows how to live (we are all shaped differently and we have to live according to how He has shaped us)
We compare ourselves with others but then we realise that God has made me “me”. These are Your hands, “How do you want me to use them”?
We need to be part of the family business.
